Full topic summary

Mixed area and volume problems combine 2D nets with 3D measures — keep formulas listed and units cubed or squared as required.

Key learning points

  • Surface area: sum the faces (nets help).
  • Volume of prism = cross-sectional area × length.
  • Watch unit conversions before comparing answers.

Worked example 1 — Cuboid surface area

Cuboid 4×3×24\times3\times2. Surface area?

Working

2(12+8+6)=522(12+8+6)=52

Sum of all face areas.

Worked example 2 — Cylinder volume

Radius 33, height 1010. Volume in terms of π\pi?

Working

90π90\pi

V=πr2hV=\pi r^2 h.

Worked example 3 — Sphere volume

Radius 33. Volume in terms of π\pi?

Working

V=43πr3=36πV=\tfrac{4}{3}\pi r^3=36\pi

Cube the radius carefully.

Worked example 4 — Prism volume

Triangular cross-section area 1212, length 77. Volume?

Working

V=84V=84

Prism volume = cross-section area × length.
